Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Fab Lab?
Fab Lab is short for “Fabrication Laboratory” and serves as an open-door, open-access community makerspace and hackerspace. A Fab Lab is generally equipped with an array of computer controlled tools that accommodates various working scales and materials, with the aim to make “almost anything.” The idea for such a space grew out of MIT Media Lab’s Center for Bits and Atoms.
Who can use your services?
The Fab Lab is for everyone in the local community as a resource center for design fabrication, digital innovation resource, and STEM education support for institutions serving K-12. Our mission is to provide underserved communities with resources, technology, and information at a grassroots level.
What’s the cost?
Programs that are funded through grants and sponsorships are 100% free to our community. Our fabrication service and educational program costs are partly subsidized by operational funding support, which means we charge at or below market value for work performed for community members. Some institutions such as other 501(c)3 nonprofits we work with qualify for in-kind matching. Please contact us directly for quotes and estimates.
