29feb1:00 PM3:00 PMEvent OverMusic through Computer Codes

Event Details

Fab Kids Series, winner of 2016 Chevron STEM Educator Award, is recommended for children ages 8+ and parents are encouraged to participate as well.

In this lesson we will learn the concepts behind how codes can be manipulated to create music using programmable circuit boards. Using a quick lesson on block coding as the basis for creating electronic music, we will delve into the history of electronic music starting with Theremins and modular synthesizers. As a hands-on component of the lesson, students will then use Scratch, an online coding interface to record tracks, master, and remix their own song.

Our teaching artist will be Julio Mena, local musician and owner of Ascension Artist Studios, an art space that provides access for local musicians, bands, and artist to create and record music. He also produces and performs instrumental hip-hop and electronic music under the moniker GRVSRS where he blurs the musical lines between DJ and percussionist. Amongst his business, he continues to teach percussion and electronic music production using the music software Ableton Live, to students throughout the Southwest area.

We will learn about simple circuits and scratch programming to discover the workflow of creating touch activated triggers to control instrument sounds and loops. Then students will assist Julio in creating new configurations of robotic controlled actuators to manipulate acoustic instruments that can accompany our newly created electronic beats. Students will walk away with the knowledge of input-processing-output from analog to digital and digital to analog.

Thank you to Texas Commission on the Arts and City of El Paso Museums and Cultural Affairs Department for sponsoring events at the intersection of art and technology.
