In this 4-day summer camp, participants will explore the applications of 3D scanning, 3D modeling, and virtual reality. Participants will learn how to create a 3D bust scan, clean up the model, create additional 3D assets for their model, use motion capture tools, and finally view their animated model in a VR environment. Day 1 – Personal 3D Bust Scans and Begin Model Touch-ups
On the first day of camp, we will provide an overview of the summer camp and what will be accomplished over the course of the week. We will begin with a short presentation on 3D scanning and 3D modeling. Participants will be scanned by the iPad Structure Sensor to generate a personal 3D bust model. After receiving their scan, participants will use Meshmixer to clean up their model. A basic Meshmixer tutorial will be given to demonstrate how to use editing brushes.
Day 2 – Complete Touch-ups, Begin 3D Modeling with CAD Software
Participants will continue to clean up their models to ensure that their models are smooth and have no abnormal geometry. Another short tutorial will be given on Meshmixer, this time with a focus on transforming and connecting objects. Participants will then append premade props from Thingiverse or create props to wear. In the interest of time, students will use only their head and attach it to various premade bodies. Students will upload their models online to be rigged by the instructors overnight.
Day 3 – Use Motion Capture Tools to Animate Models
Students will be given an introduction to Cospaces to understand the basics and experience of virtual reality. Teams of students will take turns creating and experiencing their environments using their phones and Google Cardboard. Students will get a chance to create one or two animations for themselves using Kinect motion capture.
Day 4 – Finish Animations, View Animated Model in Virtual Reality
Any remaining students should finish their animations. With individual models set up in each VR rig, students will take turns viewing their model in an Unreal Engine environment. If possible, the demonstration of each model will be projected to the rest of the class to see the work of other students.
