Bio-inspired Design: Nervous System’s Cellular Lamp

For lovers of organic biomimetic designs, you will be pleased to know that there is an open-source printable lamp that is a shelled torus divid into “cells” thus “cellular” from Nervous System. Check out our previous post about their awesome customizable, 3D printed jewelry.

This is a very challenging item to 3D print because of its numerous overhangs and bridges as well as its complex design makes splicing the model tricky in the software. We are happy to announce that, after several failed attempts and half-prints, Fab Lab El Paso now has its own Cellular Lamp printed on the Kossel Mini 3D Printer—and it’s a beauty!

You can print your own at the Fab Lab. However, depending on your budget, the best way to find the right size and design is to use Nervous System’s own interactive page where you can customize sizes and play with the cellular parameters.

Nervous System 3D Printed Jewelry

Here are some beautiful 3D printed jewelry inspired by biomimicry and parametric design. Nervous System has been on the scene since 2007. The head designers Jessica Rosenkrantz and Jesse Louis-Rosenberg graduated from MIT and come from a variety of backgrounds such as Architecture, Biology, Design, Robotics, and Mathematics. Nervous System is a truly interdisciplinary, innovative, and collaborative project.

Check out Subdivison Bracelet, Regular Bracelet, and Diagrid Bracelet designs that are open-source and available on Thingiverse. If you are looking to print a gift yourself, these are a more wallet friendly alternative to the jewelry collection available on the online Nervous System store.

Foldable Fractals by David Dessen (Sanch)

Style: "Daylight pop minus"

Foldable fractal is a project originally created by generative artist David Dessens (Sanch). The piece was generated using a recursive algorithm based on a lindermayer system. The software vvvv was use to generate the cutting path. The piece was created using the ability of the laser to half cut a material to help folding the material, a technique used here to simplify and accelerate fabrication. The piece (above) was designed for Lovebytes Digital Festival in the UK.
